MANAGING ALLERGIES & INTOLERANCES

What is an intolerance?

This is when a particular food is more difficult for the body to break down, therefore, it is treated as a threat and the immune system tries to fight it to rid it from the body.

Intolerances and allergies can manifest as:
- Rash around the mouth (immediately after the food is consumed)
- Rash on any part of the body
- Runny nose
- Continuous colds and flus
- More susceptible to ear infections
- Generally more mucousy
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Eczema
- Anaphylaxis

What is the difference between an intolerance and an allergy?
An intolerance is caused by a build-up of a particular food or food group which eventually, overloads the system and symptoms appear. It can be difficult to determine which food is causing the reaction.
An allergy is an immediate reaction caused by one particular food group which can be more severe than the reaction associated with intolerance and can lead to anaphylaxis.

Foods most likely to cause intolerance or allergy:

- Dairy
- Gluten
- Solanacea Family (eggplant, potato, zucchini, tomato, capsicum)
- Corn
- Wheat
- Soy
- Nuts

There are specific tests you can take to determine exactly what you or your baby/child is intolerant or allergic to. Please contact me for more information.
